Momentum Brace
Momentum® is an innovative custom carbon fibre Ankle Foot Orthosis (AFO). Designed to partially offload the foot and ankle to relieve pressure and pain following complex lower limb injury. The unique design and carbon fibre construction is lightweight yet strong, making the brace ideal for both daily use and high impact activities.
Design & Structure
Lightweight Strength, Maximum Mobility.
With carbon fibre struts that work much like prosthetic running blades it stores and returns energy to provide a spring in your step enabling participation in high impact activities such as running. Each brace is bespoke with the optimal alignment, spring strength and off-loading customised to each individual user.
A product with a tough military background
The original IDEOTM Brace was designed by the US Military and shared with the British Military as part of a programme for sharing best practice. Blatchford, who provides prosthetic and orthotic services to the Ministry of Defence, worked on making a UK version which is lighter and stronger and has successfully fitted many patients with Momentum, allowing them to continue their active lifestyles.
Who is it for?
Who is the Momentum AFO designed for?
Momentum can be effective in treating patients who are experiencing any chronic pain, weakness or instability at the foot and ankle following complex lower limb injury and some congenital conditions. By addressing a range of underlying conditions, Momentum® offers a versatile and effective way to improve mobility and quality of life.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions:
- Ankle trauma or ankle fracture
- Ankle fusion
- Ankle osteoarthritis
- Acute foot and ankle pain during movement or weight bearing
- Acute foot and ankle pain upon activity
- Abnormal gait pattern with asymmetric stride length and limited push off
Neurological conditions:
- Peripheral nerve injuries such as drop foot
- Spina Bifida
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT)
Congenital conditions:
- Club Foot

Momentum is not recommended where any of the following are present: Oedema (swelling) that can’t be medically managed, open wounds, poor cognitive ability.

Treatment Process
1. Your Assessment
During your appointment, your clinician will discuss your medical background and future goals as well as providing a physical examination to understand your needs better. We advise you to wear comfortable sportswear or shorts for this appointment, to allow easy access to your foot and ankle.
2. Where can I be treated?
Momentum® is available at several approved clinics in the UK, including Continuum Mobility, both in their Sheffield clinic and within the ground floor clinic at Blatchford's Basingstoke site. If your initial appoint (measurements & casting) is in Sheffield, your Momentum brace will be usually supplied at a follow-up appointment around two weeks later. Alternatively, for Basingstoke appointments, the process usually involves three appointments instead of two and your Momentum brace could take a couple more weeks for delivery.
